A woman’s period is associated with a number of myths and taboos that girls and boys listen to their whole life. In the past, a woman was supposed to avoid bathing or washing her hair during her period. At that time, women had to stay home because menstrual blood was considered dangerous and had to be avoided. Although today these beliefs are considered to be mere superstition, many couples still abstain from sexual intercourse during period because they believe there are justifiable reasons for it. Some people simply don’t stand the sight of blood and get goose bumps when they think of having sexual intercourse on blood-stained sheets. But is sexual intercourse during period really risky for the woman and her partner or is this just one of the myths?

Sexual intercourse during the period can be even better

If you can’t stand the sight of blood, you can satisfy each other differently. You can try to perform mutual masturbation or have anal sexual intercourse and thus avoid the bloody experience. But if you’re one of those people who aren’t bothered by a little blood during sexual intercourse, you can feel at ease. Sexual intercourse during period is as dangerous as sexual intercourse in normal days. Sexual intercourse and orgasm relax muscles, which has a beneficial effect on a woman if she’s suffering from menstrual cramps. Penetration can be significantly easier because the vagina is additionally lubricated with blood and the woman can achieve a mind-blowing orgasm because of the swollen vagina and clitoris. Despite the beneficial effect, you should remember to use protection. If you have sex with a stranger, it is recommended that, in any case, you use protection against sexually transmitted diseases. Otherwise, there is no proof that sexually transmitted diseases are more easily contracted during the period. In general, women aren’t more prone to diseases during their period. It is particularly important that you protect yourself against diseases and, naturally, unwanted pregnancy. It is wrong to think that a woman is unable to get pregnant during her period. Therefore, use suitable protection instead of taking risks.

Sexual intercourse during sexual period can be clean and feasible

Oral sexual intercourse during period is completely feasible as well. You won’t believe it, but it is completely clean too. Before a man lowers his head between her legs, a woman slightly washes the entrance to her vagina under running water and inserts a tampon. It will absorb almost all her menstrual blood, so the man won’t have any contact with it while orally satisfying her. However, the man should avoid inserting his tongue into the woman’s vagina if he wants to avoid blood. A diaphragm is also very effective because it blocks the entrance to the womb and thus prevents blood from leaking out. You can also use, for instance, the Mooncup menstrual cup that collects blood. If you chose a tampon, don’t forget to remove it before you have sexual intercourse, otherwise it may happen that, instead of cuddling after sex, you will run to your gynaecologist to remove the lost tampon. The menstrual cup also needs to be removed because its only purpose is to retain blood and therefore isn’t appropriate for vaginal sexual intercourse.

Practical advice for sexual intercourse during period

Here is some practical advice on how to stay clean when performing foreplay or having sexual intercourse during period:

-         Lay a towel on the bed, or the place where you’ll have sex, to avoid the sight of blood stains. It is best that you use a black or dark red towel where blood is practically invisible.

-         Prepare a few moist handkerchiefs or a wet towel to wipe your blood off his penis after sex.

-         If the man doesn’t like to see blood on his penis, the woman can use a diaphragm to prevent blood from leaking out. Despite that, some couples truly enjoy the feeling of penetration during the period.

-         You can also have sexual intercourse in the shower, where water will wash menstrual blood away and the intercourse will be as clean as possible.
