Testosterone for Female Sexual Desire
We can use the male hormone testosterone to help women who suffer from loss of sexual desire.
Women need a sufficient level of testosterone to experience sexual desire.
Testosterone is produced by an endocrine gland, the
Leydig cells in the testes. Although testosterone is the male hormone, it is also present in small quantities in the female body. The levels of testosterone in the female body may be different. Women with high amounts of testosterone can lose hair similar to male hair loss, their skin has more pimples and it can also have more hair, while women with low or negligible amounts of testosterone usually suffer from a
decline in sexual desire, shows a recent study.
The level of testosterone in the female body depends on a number of factors (for instance, physical activity) and, according to latest information, it also depends on sex.

Sari Van Anders, a researcher in the Department of Psychology at Canada's Simon Fraser University, conducted two separate studies with her team. We are interested in the first study where they examined 49 women prior to and after close physical intimacy, prior to and after sexual intercourse, and prior to and after exercise. Exercise was included as a control since it has been proved that physical activity raises the level of testosterone.
'After' included directly following sex as well as the next morning, when the test subjects also answered a questionnaire that included questions about orgasms, libido and feelings of sexual attractiveness.
The study established that the test subjects experienced higher levels of testosterone just before and after cuddling, caressing and having sexual intercourse. The higher the level of testosterone, the greater the likelihood that the woman reached an orgasm during sexual intercourse. Women with a higher level of testosterone felt more sexually attractive the next day compared to women with a lower level of the male hormone.

“We don't know how testosterone increases after sex and close physical intimacy might benefit women, but some possibilities to examine in future studies include increased sexual desire, more positive moods, or more energy. Our [first] paper does suggest that there might be sexual benefits to higher levels of testosterone,” says van Anders.

In the future, Dr. Sari Van Anders hopes that with additional funding of her research she will be able to establish how testosterone affects women. She hopes that her findings will help discover medications and therapies for women suffering from loss of libido and sexual desire.
