Vaginal cosmetic surgery has become increasingly popular in Great Britain. Heather Leach, who made the documentary The Perfect Vagina, decided to undergo this surgical procedure, too.

What is vaginoplasty?

The term vaginoplasty refers to all surgical procedures performed on the female genitalia. Sometimes the term is also used to describe a sex change operation on a woman born without the vagina, that is in the case of a transsexual woman. The aforementioned procedure also often involves cosmetic surgery of the damaged area of the vagina after a disease or a serious injury. Lately, however, vaginoplasty has become a synonym for cosmetic surgery of the labia for women who aren’t satisfied with the appearance of their vagina.

Cut off my labia

In Great Britain, the rate of cosmetic procedures on the inner labia has doubled in the last five years. A lot of women seem to be unhappy because of the appearance of their large and loose labia, and crave for their removal. Their negative self-image is frequently the result of being teased by men with whom they have sexual intercourse.

The procedure involves the removal of that part of the inner labia which is visible from the outside and which the outer labia can’t cover. “Yeah, they slice it off with a scalpel,” Heather Leach says to the media - she made a documentary on vaginoplasty and decided herself to undergo the procedure.

Is the surgical procedure safe?

Many teenage girls don’t consider that the procedure might ruin their sex life for ever as the inner labia happen to be attached to the clitoris, the most important body part for sexual stimulation. The recovery period can last up to six months and makes it very difficult to pass urine. After the procedure, the pieces of the vagina are flung straight into the trash can and thrown away with the rubbish.

Other types of cosmetic vaginal surgery

Beside the removal of the inner labia, there’s a great demand for vaginal liposuction where a surgeon sucks the fat out of the pubic bone area to make it flatter.

There’s also the so-called “G-shot” procedure where a surgeon injects Botox into the area where your G-spot is supposed to be. A Botox injection has to be administered every three months and the price for a session amounts to approximately 2,300 euros.

Why do more and more British teenagers decide for the procedure?

According to Heather Leach, this is largely due to peer pressure, particularly the pressure created by boys who constantly watch porn movies, which, in her opinion, don’t show a normal vagina. Boys get the impression that a normal vulva has the inner lips ‘tucked’ under the outer lips and that it’s more or less hairless.
