Viagra is supposed to increase the life span of people suffering from muscular dystrophy. A dystrophy is any disease where the structure and normal cell functioning has been hindered due to a lack of nutritious elements in the body. The reason is usually poor blood flow through tissue. In such a case, we speak of muscles that stop functioning. Just like Viagra helps with impotence, it could supposedly also help to prevent heart failure with patients afflicted with this disease.

Muscular dystrophy is a natural muscular condition for which there is no cure to treat this treacherous disease yet. We are familiar with quite a few kinds of this dystrophy. The signs of the disease occur very early in the development (a child often cannot walk until reaching two or three years). The patients are usually in a wheelchair at 20 because of weakened paraspinal muscles and death occurs until the age of 30 because there is usually heart failure due to weakened intercostal and respiratory muscles.

Scientists have discovered that Viagra and similar products (Cialis and Levitra) prevent the destruction of chemical cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate), which is present when blood vessels expand. In this case, the chemical substance keeps an erection going and at the same time the increased blood flow ensures an appropriate amount of necessary “nutrition” for its tissue, which ensures that the heart is more powerful and healthier and resistant to the negative effects of weakened muscular tissue. Viagra and the two other products supposedly inhibits the PDE5 enzyme, which destroys cGMP.

The director of the Montreal Heart Institute Research Centre said: "These experimental results give us hope that one day it will be possible to treat cardiac problems in patients with muscular dystrophy with this approach, and perhaps even treat other heart diseases."

So far, tests have been conducted only on mice, but they plan to perform them on people as well.
