What is anorgasmia?

Although films show orgasm as something that occurs in sexual intercourse every time, the picture can be slightly different in real life. The topic of anorgasmia was presented in quite a few documentaries where even mature women reveal that they never experienced an orgasm in their life. Orgasm depends on several factors. It occurs under the influence of a complex reaction to physical, emotional and psychological events. If your body doesn’t react spontaneously and comfortably to one or several of these factors, this can affect your ability to reach an orgasm. This kind of condition would be called frigidity in layman’s terms, but experts termed it anorgasmia already in the 1960s.

Three types of anorgasmia

Anorgasmia is divided into three types, that is, primary, secondary and situational anorgasmia. Primary anorgasmia is experienced by women who have never had an orgasm in their life, regardless of the number or type of sexual experiences. Secondary anorgasmia occurs when women ‘lose orgasm’ at some point of life. Therefore, they normally experienced orgasm in sexual intercourse without any major problems, but for some reason they lost this ability. Situational anorgasmia occurs when a woman experiences an orgasm without any problem, but only on condition that circumstances have a stimulative effect on her. For instance, such a woman will be able to reach an orgasm upon penetration or masturbation, but not during cunnilingus. Naturally, every type of anorgasmia can be treated, but first the real causes have to be determined.

Physical causes

The most common physical causes of orgasmic disorder are various diseases, diabetes and neurological conditions, such as multiple sclerosis. Experiencing orgasm can also be affected by unpleasant gynaecological procedures, such as hysterectomy or cancer treatment. Orgasmic disorder can also be caused by dyspareunia or painful sexual intercourse. The most common drugs that cause orgasmic disorder are drugs for high blood pressure, antihistamines and antidepressants. Besides anorgasmia, men can also have problems with achieving and maintaining erection as the consequence of use of the aforementioned drugs. Excessive use of alcohol or illegal substances can also have an effect on achieving orgasm. The natural factor nobody can avoid is the process of aging. Anatomy, hormones, the neurological system and the circulatory system change with age, which can also cause orgasmic disorder. In women, levels of oestrogen decrease during menopause, which has numerous consequences. The sensitivity of the clitoris, nipples and skin may decrease. Naturally, this isn’t a rule and it therefore often happens that women rediscover and renew their sex life after menopause.

Some experts claim that situational anorgasmia isn’t a real disorder, but it only involves the circumstances of sexual intercourse that don’t have a stimulative effect. (jlp)

Psychological causes

Psychological causes can also affect the ability to achieve orgasm without any problems. Apart from anxiety or depression, sex life can also be largely disturbed by the anxiety of the actual sexual intercourse. This often occurs in men if they’re burdened with the thought of their performance. In addition, everyday stress and financial problems also affect a desire for sex. Cultural and religious values are special fields that interfere in the sex life of an individual with their principles. Upbringing can send to an individual a message that it’s sinful to enjoy sex, which causes the feelings of guilt. However, the issue isn’t only the avoidance of the feelings of guilt, but also the fear of unwanted pregnancy and, of course, the modern-day plague – AIDS.

Relationship problems

Couples that experience problems outside the bedroom can also bring the problems in the bed. This commonly involves a weak bond between the partners, hidden and apparent differences, poor sexual communication, unfulfilled partner’s desires or infidelity. In such cases, there are various counsellors that can advise couples on how to overcome their crisis.
