Ecstasy is one of the most popular drugs among the youth, especially at parties, and it was also the ‘official’ rave drug. It is a psychoactive substance, a subclass of the phenethylamines (3,4-methylenedioxymethaphetamine - MDMA). Its chemical structure is similar to amphetamines and mescaline and acts as a stimulant with mild hallucinogenic effects.
Its popularity is not limited to parties alone, but it is also used in a more intimate way. Some praise the positive effects it has on their sex life. Individuals react differently to hallucinogenic drugs, so it is quite normal that opinions (whether ecstasy actually helps sexually or not) differ on the matter.
The participants in the research listed the following positive effects of ecstasy: it decreases the focus on the sexual act itself and helps them feel more relaxed and confident; the arousal is higher and intercourse lasts longer; person becomes more sensitive; women achieve better and more intense orgasms… But there are two sides to every story, and this is even more true when it comes to drugs.
The negative effects on men can be quite devastating, as ecstasy consumption leads to weak or even no erection. Men and women can have difficulties in achieving orgasm. The biggest problem is the fact that people tend to ‘fall in love’ quicker because ecstasy gives them a false feeling of empathy and many have unprotected intercourse, which can lead to sexual diseases or pregnancy. On top of it all, ecstasy can leave long-lasting consequences on your sexual life.
Of course, not only on your sexual life. After the use of ecstasy people tend to sweat a lot, get dry mouth and their blood pressure increases. Dehydration occurs, and this can lead to stroke and consequently death. After a few doses anxiety, fear and insomnia appear. Ecstasy also causes severe liver and kidney damage. It is probably redundant to tell you that no effect caused by ‘X’ is worth it.
