PMS or premenstrual syndrome is the name given to the set of psychological, physical and emotional symptoms that occasionally appear in about 80% of women. In 5% of women, the syndrome is so severe that it disrupts their normal life. Find the best treatment for you.
There are as many as 150 symptoms of PMS
Here are just some of them: breast tenderness and/or swelling, dizziness, headaches, cramps, nausea, vomiting, weight gain, abdominal bloating, swelling of the face, feet and hands, irritability, anxiety, depression, moods swings, appetite changes, tiredness, poor concentration, sweating, palpitations and so on.
What causes it?
PMS is caused by hormonal changes: rise and fall in levels of oestrogen and progesterone.
It’s also possible that PMS is the result of oversensitivity to normal hormonal changes in a woman’s menstrual cycle. Other probable cause is that hormonal changes lead to changes in a diet and these changes lead to a lack of nutrients.

Diet and exercise
- Changes can be alleviated by regular exercise, particularly aerobic exercise.
- Phytohormones that have a beneficial effect are contained in soya and soy products, particularly soybeans. You should choose fibre-rich food and eat small portions many times a day.
- Food rich in calcium, such as broccoli, fish and legumes, has a beneficial effect.
- Avoid caffeine, sugar, sodium, salt and processed or prepared foods. You should also avoid red meat and greasy food because they increase the level of oestrogen, which makes PMS even worse.
Supplements
- The appropriate supplements in the case of water retention are calcium, magnesium and vitamin B6 and vitamin E in the case of breast tenderness.
- Dandelion root tea and evening primrose oil (Willow herb family) are also recommended.
- Some people recommend red wine and peppermint or camomile tea. Be careful with wine because it can cause a headache and dehydration, which you really don’t need.

Affirmation
PMS means that you allow confusion, give to much meaning to external influences and reject female processes. You can resolve this problem by repeating the following: “I’m in control of my mind and life. I’m a strong and dynamic woman. All the parts of my body function perfectly.”
