What’s the Right Way to Insert a Tampon?

Some women use only tampons, while others don’t even want to hear about them. Maybe the problem is that they don’t know how to insert a tampon in the right way.

Tampons can save you in many delicate situations. It’s much easier to engage in sports activities, bathe and bask in the sun, or have sex, if you're using a tampon. Some women use tampons as a sex toy in masturbation. But there are times when tampons just make your period even more unpleasant. Despite different sizes, you can still feel discomfort and pain when you insert a tampon.

Improperly inserted tampon causes pain

If you insert a tampon in the right way, you shouldn’t feel anything. If you feel pain, this often indicates that the tampon has been inserted in the wrong way. Some women feel pain in their vagina as well as their back and abdomen. The back pain is a common side effect of a woman's period. The pain is normal if the womb, filled with blood, presses against the back. On the other hand, back pain can also occur if you insert a tampon in the wrong way. The same applies to abdominal pain. If you feel pain only when you're using a tampon, you’ve probably inserted the tampon in the wrong way. In that case, pull it out and insert a new one. Only in rare cases, the pain caused by a tampon indicates that you have a more serious problem. Pain can also be associated with toxic shock.

How to insert a tampon without any pain?

Use a lubricant

The most common cause of pain is lack of lubrication in your vagina. So, you insert a tampon the right way, but your vagina is just too dry, although you’re completely healthy. The problem appears if women try to insert a tampon when their period is already weak. For women who use tampons for the first time, it’s highly recommended that they use them in the first few days of their period because they’ll be able to insert a tampon into their vagina without any problems. If you don’t bleed much and have little lubrication, it may be very unpleasant to insert a tampon and as a result women often don’t want to use tampons anymore. If you have weak periods and a dry vagina, use a lubricant. When your period is already weak, it’s best that you insert a less absorbent tampon , so it won’t absorb what little lubrication you still have. A less absorbent tampon is also the right choice if you decide to experiment with tampons in masturbation. You should use a water-based lubricant.

Try to relax when inserting a tampon

Some women experience a lot of problems when they try to insert a tampon. Just as in  sexual intercourse, a woman has to be in a certain position so that she can relax the muscles of her vagina. The easiest way to achieve that is to sit or lie down. But that’s not always an option because the environment in which women often have to change tampons is the bathroom. So, it’s best to squat, or you can put one leg on the toilet or the edge of the bathtub. You need both hands to insert a tampon. With one hand you hold the tampon and with the other hand you spread apart your vaginal lips. Then you insert the tampon by pushing your finger to the entrance to your vagina. If it’s your first time, you can use a mirror. But since practice makes perfect, you probably won’t need it for long.

Virgins can also use tampons

A lot of women have been raised in the belief that it’s dangerous to use tampons before the first sexual intercourse. That’s not true, of course. Today, women or girls are much more active than in the past, so it’s not unusual that their hymen is stretched before the first sexual intercourse. Approximately 2% of women are born with an extremely tight hymen and as a result can’t insert a tampon. But for others, the hymen shouldn’t be the reason for not  using tampons. To start with, it’s advisable to use the smallest tampons. In any case, the use of tampons has no effect on your virginity. Today,  ignorance and lack of knowledge about the female anatomy are the only reasons why the hymen is so closely connected with virginity. Despite that, some women are still worried about the use of tampons.
