When are problems in your sex life so big that there’s no better alternative than to turn to a sexologist? Who are sexologists and what do they do? What does the therapy look like?

What is sexology?

Many people picture a sexologist as a character from erotic comics. However, the truth is far from this image. Sexologists are therapists that are usually taken very seriously.

Sexology is the study of sexual interest, sexual behaviour and the functions of sexuality. It’s an interdisciplinary science that incorporates knowledge in the fields of biology, medicine, psychology, sociology, statistics, pedagogy, anthropology, etc. It studies sexual development, relationships, the act of intercourse itself and sexual disorders.

Sexologists are experts familiar with interdisciplinary sex-related issues and they link them to psychological aspects of sexuality. The work of sexologists includes education, guidance, counseling and planning, as well as therapies with couples or individuals.

What’s the course of therapy?

Counseling is a structured, but flexible process that transfers knowledge to patients to help them resolve their problems. It’s a structured discussion, focused on a particular aspect. Sexologists take a holistic approach to the discussion of physical, mental and environmental factors that seem to be problematic. First, the data related to the problem are gathered (they concern the patient’s past), a diagnosis is made, including prognosis, advice and a plan, and then the process is closely monitored.

Psychotherapy lasts for a long period of time and is aimed at changing the problematic behavioral patterns.

Who benefits?

Therapy conducted by sexologists can be effective in resolving common problems such as loss of sexual desire or unequal sexual desire, painful sexual intercourse, premature ejaculation, infertility, sex addiction, etc. It’s also effective if the problems are a result of a physical inability, disease, operative procedure or merely age.
