Not every kind of bleeding is menstrual. It may happen that you are bleeding slightly and you think it is your period, while in fact it is a minor vaginal bleeding, which can occur during ovulation as well - when the woman is most fertile. During the ovulation, an egg from one of the ovaries is released and travels towards the uterus and if you have unprotected sex at that time, the chances of conceiving are great.

Ovulation can occur even before your period is over or only a few days after your menstrual cycle is finished. So the sperm can fertilize the egg even a few days after the man ejaculated into his partner's vagina. In both cases, sex during your period can end with pregnancy.

Unprotected sex is risky at all times, even during your period. So always use protection and don't count on safe days, unless you are ready for a surprise at the end of the month. Using protection will also prevent any risk of being infected with sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia, genital herpes and the HIV virus.
