The Sex Nerve

The recently discovered olfactory nerve O determines who we will love and whom we will go to bed with. We're talking about the so called sex nerve.

Scientists have found that the O nerve can start or end a relationship. (jlp)

The O nerve, as it is known by the experts, has long avoided the medical ‘radar’ because of being very small. When it was discovered in whales, scientists started to wonder whether people might have the same "sex nerve".

And we do!

What's the purpose of the sex nerve? The O nerve ends in the nasal cavity and the fibres wind all the way up to the part of the brain responsible for sexuality. Even though it ends in our noses, the sex nerve has nothing to do with the conscious smell perception. Its task is to recognize sexual hints from our potential partners.

Scientists believe we are more drawn to people who have a different smell than we. Relatives often smell similar to us, the sex nerve being the evolutionary barrier for family members to engage in sexual activity. Scientists have found that the O nerve can start or end a relationship. Couples with a high level of similar chemicals identified by the unconscious smell perception are more prone to infertility, miscarriage and infidelity. The more the chemical structure of your smell differs from your partner’s, the more chances you have for a successful and long relationship!

The story, however, takes a different turn with pregnant women. During pregnancy, they are more drawn to relatives and family who offer them support. The sex nerve in pregnant women turns the search for a potential partner into the search for a shelter.

The O nerve is actually most influenced by pregnancy and contraceptive pills. Contraceptive pills change the hormone structure of the female body: taking contraceptive pills deceives the body into believing it is pregnant. Women who take contraceptive pills thus also turn to their dearest and loved ones instead of potential partners because of the sex nerve. Scientists warn that if the woman is taking pills at the beginning of a relationship, passion between the partners might subside after she stops taking them.

Unfortunately, we have no influence on our chemical structure of smell. Perfumes and eaux-de-cologne cannot deceive the sex nerve. The smells that attract us to some persons of the opposite sex are subconscious and instinctive. Not even the most expensive perfumes can deceive this newly-discovered intelligent nerve. When it comes to sexual attraction and the search for the right one, we should obviously let things take their own course.

Only time will show what the true role of the sex nerve is. Thus far, we should just remember: when it comes to love, follow your nose.
